Adaptation of Modern African-American WritersModern writers learn from the past by reading works written by authors of that particular era. Contemporary African-American writers gain knowledge and insight into the horrendous and sometimes harmonious conditions that plagued Africans during striverry and the slave trade. By reading the actual words, thoughts, and feelings of these enslaved Africans, mod writers receive information from the perspective of the victimized. Lucille Cliftons slaveship is a vivid example of a contemporary writer borrowing from the past to depict another account of the slave trade. The fact that Cliftons father told her stories ab fall out her familys struggle and she, herself, traced her lineage back to Dahomey, West Africa helped to impact the tone, ideas, and imagery used in her poem. Although slaveship is not written by soul who has experienced slavery herself, it does use similar elements found in Olaudah Equianos Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equia no and Phillis Wheatleys On Being Brought from Africa to America.Cliftons slaveship begins with the image of people tightly packed and close together in the bottom of a ship. The narrator says that they were loaded like spoons into the belly of Jesus (lines 1-2). Later in the poem, the narrator describes being chained to the heart of the Angel (line 8). Equiano also speaks of the crowded conditions he faced on his journey to America. He states that he was soon put down under the decks (p 157) where this nauseous situation was again aggravated by the gallings of chains (p 159). The human cargo on these slave ships endured weeks and months of dreadful and disgusting odors as a result of these fasten conditions. Cliftons slav... ...Equiano at the end of Chapter Two. Without having lived during that particular time, contemporary African-American writers must rely on past authors and their knowledge of human nature to put forth accurate stories with the purpose of educating and informing todays readers about Americas hideous history.

Human Life Torture of the MindErnest Hemingway captures the essence and origins of nihilistic thought in A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, written in a time of religious and moral confusion shortly after The Great War. The ideas expressed in this short story represent the post World War 1 thinking of Hemingway, and the notoriously nihilistic Lost Generation in Paris, which was greatly influenced by the many traumas of war. Learning from his unnerving experiences in battle, Hemingway enforces the idea that all human will inevitably fade into eternal cipherness and everything valued by macrocosm is worthless. He develops this idea by creating a brilliant mockery of two coveted religious documents, revealing authority figures as typical, despicable, human beings, and he reduces disembodied spirit into the most raw, simplistic, and frightening reality imaginable. Hemingway states that all humans will naturally die alone and literally be in despair about nothing (494), and that people will either seek a calm and pleasant caf (496), or a self-inflicted stopping point simply to escape despair. Undoubtedly, Hemingway eliminates any consideration of a higher meaning because he believes that life is all a nothing, and a man is nothing too (496). By viewing the actions of three different generations, Hemingways A Clean, Well-Lighted Place elaborates on the idea that human life is not continual enlightenment and growth, but gradual despair, and an inevitable death into nada (497). The immature and confident waiter, representing the youngest of the three male generations, is the only apparent spec of existentialist thought in the story. Further, Hemingway has shown the world that man has created many bogus ways to cope with the unsurmountable fear of nothingness, namely religion. Bluntly, people can try to kid their selves into feeling soulful, genuine, or meaningful, but there is no need to fear for the human soul, as it is non-existent.

Literary Analysis: Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants

In this memoir, she is relating the neglectful way that her and siblings (Maureen, Brian and Lori) have been raised by their p arnts Rex and arise Mary Walls. For this reason, the CPS (Child Protective Service) decided to make an investigation to know rather or not they should remove the custody of the Walls children to their parent. For me good parenting is being able-bodied to lead your children toward the real difficulty of life and I hink Rex and Mary go up are doing it. In my opinion this will be a hard decisiveness to take. The Walls family shouldnt be separated because, even though they are neglected by their parent They are learning close life values which are living maintenancelessly and being responsible. Also we have admit the fact that the parents are educating them. So, although the parents are irresponsible they are not bad as many people think. The walls children are constantly exposed to a dangerous situation where they are always capable of Handling it.On their house on North leash Street (in Phoenix), Jeannette was about to get sexually abused during the night by one the guy of their neighborhood because Mary Rose and Rex decided to let the doors and the windows open. quite of being afraid, they run after the pervert to give him a correction while their parents were sleeping (103). Well common children with a lot of affection wouldnt react that way. Because of the neglect hatitude of their parent they learned how to defend themselve. Years old Jeannette burned herself when she was cooking hot dogs. She spent weeks at the hopistal. Back home, she started to cook once again because she was hungry and no one would do it for her(10- 15). Her carefree mother told her Youve got to get right back in the saddle. You rottert live in fear of nearthing as basic as fire It is probably an horrible thing to say to your c hild that beneficial got a burning accident, but it true that you cannot be afraid of fire since its used to do a lot of things as it happens to cook.Some other kids would be traumatized for life but Jeannette faced it. As you can see the Walls parent are pushing their kids to get over their fear which is a good thing to do. I guess when you have irresponsible parent like they do have, you just have to learn how to be in charge.This kids have the ability to think that mom and dad wont do it so lets do it. The parent are teaching the children not to wait for someone to do thing for them. That point shouldnt be ignored. While they were moving around, Rose Mary and Rex took the time to educate their children, teaching them mathematic, physics, geology and how to read. The Walls children are smart at the point where they could help their mother with her work as a teacher.In Welch, when Lori and Jeannette decided to prevent money to go to in New York, Jeannette could do others kids of her school homework and asignments in math, science and book report and get paid for it(224). Even though she is neglect, she get enough skill from her parents that made her good at school. The Glass Castle is a memoir of Jeannette Walls relating her childhood story with her dysfunctional parents. She is talking about the neglectful way that her and her siblings (Maureen, Brian and Lori) are raised.Through examples we were able to see that even though Rose Mary and Rex are irresponsible, they arent as faulty as some people think. Because they learned to their children how to be fearless, responsible and they also educated them. So I suggest the CPS to let the walls family together because separating them can cause an activated trauma which can negatively affect their personal ity . The society need strong people like them. The CPS should oblige Rose Mary and Rex to drive welfare to the government and make sure that the children live in a decent environment.
